An MRI exam revealed the break. Head coach Jay Gruden updated Paul’s status after the game, which was Washington’s preseason opener.

The injury occurred in the first quarter when Paul was rolled up on by Browns linebacker Craig Robertson (WARNING: Graphic images).

Cleveland trainers immediately placed an air cast on Paul’s lower leg and he was carted off the field.

A fifth-round draft pick out of Nebraska in 2011, Paul was coming off his best NFL season with 39 catches for 507 yards and a touchdown last season.

The injury is just the latest for the Redskins at the position. Third-stringer Logan Paulsen is dealing with a toe injury that could require surgery and Jordan Reed is nursing a minor hamstring injury.

This article has been updated to reflect a later diagnosis for Paul.
