Luckily for Walton, the Lakers received the No. 2 overall pick in June’s draft as the lottery matched its odds for the first time in history. If the Lakers had finished outside of the top 3, they would have had to give the pick to the 76ers. Walton will likely have the pleasure of coaching Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram for the foreseeable future once he says goodbye to Stephen Curry and company.
To be fair to Walton, Dikembe Mutombo “randomly” congratulated the 76ers on winning the lottery hours early, so maybe Walton thought the results were leaked like the NCAA Tournament bracket this year and truly fell hard for the prank.
